Rawlinna

Rawlinna is a locality in South Australia, situated in the remote western part of the state. It is located on the Eyre Highway, approximately 730 kilometers (450 miles) west of Adelaide and about 130 kilometers (80 miles) east of the Western Australian border. Historically, Rawlinna was established as a railway town and a service point for the Trans-Australian Railway. The Trans-Australian Railway is a significant rail line connecting Port Augusta in South Australia with Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, crossing the Nullarbor Plain.

The area around Rawlinna is characterized by its arid landscape, typical of the Nullarbor Plain. Vegetation is sparse, consisting mainly of saltbush and bluebush. The climate is hot and dry, with very low rainfall. Due to its remote location and the challenging environment, Rawlinna has a very small permanent population. Its primary function in modern times is as a stopover point for travelers on the Eyre Highway and as a site associated with the operational needs of the railway. There is a roadhouse and a small community supporting the railway infrastructure. The locality serves as a reminder of the pioneering efforts in establishing long-distance transport and communication links across Australia's vast interior.
