Raumtrümmern

Raumtrümmern, a German term literally translating to "space debris" or "space junk," refers to non-functional artificial objects in orbit around Earth. This includes defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, fragments from explosions or collisions, and even small flecks of paint or insulation.

The increasing amount of space debris poses a significant threat to operational satellites, including those used for communication, navigation, scientific research, and weather forecasting. A collision with even a small piece of debris at orbital velocities can cause catastrophic damage. This risk is exacerbated by the Kessler Syndrome, a theoretical scenario where the density of debris in low Earth orbit becomes so high that collisions between objects generate more debris, leading to a cascading effect that could render space unusable.
