Rasterointiyksiköitä, often referred to as ROPs or Render Output Units, are a fundamental component within modern graphics processing units (GPUs). They are responsible for the final stage of the graphics rendering pipeline. Once a pixel's color and depth have been determined by the shader units, the ROPs take over to perform tasks such as blending, depth testing, and stencil testing. Their primary role is to decide which pixel fragments are actually written to the framebuffer, which is the memory location where the final image is stored.

The depth test, for instance, ensures that objects closer to the viewer obscure objects that are farther away. The stencil test provides a more complex masking functionality, allowing for effects like shadows or outlines. Blending operations are crucial for rendering transparent or translucent objects by combining the color of the new fragment with the existing color in the framebuffer based on an alpha value. The number of ROPs in a GPU is a significant factor in its overall performance, particularly in scenarios involving complex lighting, transparency, and anti-aliasing techniques, as these operations are heavily reliant on the ROPs' capabilities.
