Rastern

Rastern is a city-state on the southern coast of the continent of Valis in the fictional world of Eldoria. It functions as a major trading hub and cultural center, with an estimated population of about 85,000. The name is believed to derive from early Valian terms meaning "stone harbor," though historical records show variations such as Rastin and Rastril. Geographically, Rastern lies at the mouth of the Nemar River, protected by basalt headlands and a natural harbor that supports a substantial fishing fleet and shipbuilding industry. The climate is temperate, moderated by the sea, with wet winters and dry summers.

Historically, Rastern began as a fishing village that allied with inland traders. It gained chartered autonomy and established a merchant council that governed under a charter known as the Pact of Two Harbors. In the late medieval period it developed into a merchant republic and became an important intermediary in regional trade, maintaining alliances with coastal cities and inland realms.

Economy and infrastructure form the basis of Rastern’s profile. The harbor and shipyards drive employment, with key sectors including shipping, shipbuilding, ceramics, and the amber trade. The city operates as a free port with relatively low tariffs and a diversified export basket, including salted fish, glassware, timber, and textiles. Cultural life centers on the annual Harvest of Winds festival, which honors seafaring and navigation.

Notable institutions include Rastern University and the Harbor Conservatory, which offer programs in nautical science, maritime law, and music. Landmarks include the Gate of Echoes and the Great Docks. Governance is provided by the Grand Council, composed of representatives from twelve guilds, with a primus elected by the council to a five-year term.
