Rastermuster

Rastermuster, literally “raster pattern” in German, is a sample pattern used to evaluate and calibrate raster-based imaging processes. It consists of a regular grid of elements—dots or lines—arranged at controlled sizes, densities, and angles to reproduce tones or textures in halftone and digital printing.

The term is widely used in German-language publishing, prepress, and textile reproduction. Rastermuster describes both test sheets employed during prepress work and the observed patterns in printed or rendered images that reveal resolution limits, tonal reproduction, dot gain, and potential moiré effects.

Patterns vary by type. Dot-based rasters use circular dots with defined diameters or frequencies (often described in lines per inch or lines per centimeter), while line-based screens use angled ruling to separate tones. Modern workflows may integrate digital raster patterns within color management and proofing software, whereas traditional workflows relied on physical screening contacts and film positives.

Applications include printer and press calibration, color separation checks, and proofing to ensure accurate tonal reproduction. They are also used in textile and screen printing to verify repeatability and alignment, as well as in display calibration to assess grayscale behavior and gamma response.
