They work by detecting hCG in a urine sample. The accuracy of home urine tests depends on factors such as the sensitivity of the test and the timing of the test, as it is generally recommended to test after a missed period for optimal results.

Blood tests are performed in a clinical setting and can detect hCG with greater sensitivity and earlier than urine tests. There are two types of blood tests: qualitative, which simply checks for the presence of hCG, and quantitative, which measures the exact amount of hCG in the blood. Quantitative tests can provide more detailed information about the progression of a pregnancy.

Both types of tests are highly accurate when used correctly. False negatives can occur if the test is taken too early in pregnancy or if instructions are not followed precisely. False positives are rare but can be caused by certain medical conditions, medications, or recent pregnancies.
