Ordinal methods, such as the Borda count and Condorcet method, only consider the relative order of items, not their exact scores. Cardinal methods, on the other hand, assign numerical scores to items and rank them based on these scores. Examples of cardinal methods include the point system used in sports and the scoring system used in elections.

The choice of ranking method depends on the specific context and the nature of the items being ranked. For example, in sports, a cardinal method might be more appropriate, while in elections, an ordinal method might be preferred.
