Rangiersteuerungen, also known as shunting control systems, are specialized railway signaling and control systems designed to manage train movements in yards and sidings. Their primary purpose is to ensure the safe and efficient assembly and disassembly of trains, as well as the movement of rolling stock for maintenance or storage. These systems differ from main line signaling, which is optimized for high-speed, long-distance travel.

The core function of a Rangiersteuerung is to direct locomotives and individual wagons through complex track layouts. This often involves controlling points (switches) and signals to guide the rolling stock along specific routes. In many modern systems, this is achieved through centralized control rooms where operators can monitor the entire yard and set routes remotely. Automation plays a significant role, with some systems capable of automatically sorting wagons based on pre-programmed destinations.

Key components of a Rangiersteuerung can include track circuits or axle counters to detect the presence of trains and wagons, interlockings to prevent conflicting movements, and a communication system between the control center and the rolling stock, often through radio. Some advanced Rangiersteuerungen incorporate features like automatic train protection (ATP) tailored for low-speed shunting operations, and the ability to manage multiple independent shunting operations simultaneously. The efficiency gains from these systems contribute to reduced operational costs and improved turnaround times for rolling stock.
