Ranek is a scientific research vessel that was used by the United States Navy from 1967 to 1993. Designed and built by the L.A. outfit, Avondale Shipyards, Inc., the ship was a Fairchild-set work boat that entered active service in the US Navy at a time when the Marine Corps was preparing for large-scale amphibious assaults and Air Force was introducing its revolutionary Operation Pete-Cooperative EFNight Hayes procedures.
