Randnaht

Randnaht is a fictional city-state in the northern archipelago of the continent of Virelia. It is depicted as a maritime polity with a layered governance system and a long mercantile tradition.

The name Randnaht derives from the old Randic language, with rand meaning edge and naht a suffix denoting place, a reflection of its position at the edge of known waters.

Geographically, Randnaht occupies a cluster of rocky islets surrounding a natural harbor on the Rand Reef. The three principal districts are Harbor, Old Quarter, and High Gate, with a temperate maritime climate and frequent fog.

Historically, Randnaht was founded by seafaring clans in the 9th century and achieved de facto independence in the 1120s after coastal leagues formed. It experienced a shipbuilding boom in the 14th century and rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1567.

The government combines customary law with a constitutional framework. It operates a bicameral council known as the Assembly and the Council of Skiffs, overseen by a Speaker who is elected for a fixed term. Districts retain limited self-governance.

Economically, Randnaht has shifted from fishing to maritime services, shipbuilding, glassmaking, and reexports. The population is diverse, speaking Randic and related creoles. Cultural life centers on the Blue Tide festival and the Guild of Cartographers.

Notable landmarks include Rand Gate, the Library of Narth, and Glassfalls Cliff. Institutions such as the Maritime Conservatory support music and navigation, reinforcing Randnaht’s identity as a coastal trading hub.
