Rampshaped

Rampshaped is an adjective used to describe objects, surfaces, or curves that resemble a ramp. The defining feature is an inclined profile that rises from a lower edge to a higher edge, typically with a consistent slope across the extent of the ramp. In two dimensions, a rampshaped profile is a straight line segment with a positive slope; in three dimensions, it can describe a surface formed by an inclined plane or a series of connected linear segments that collectively create a ramp-like form.

Geometrically, the slope is the ratio of vertical change to horizontal change, and the accompanying angle is the arctangent of the slope. Rampshaped forms can be smooth or piecewise linear, and they may be used to describe simple wedges, inclined planes, or more complex surfaces that maintain an overall ramp-like character.

In practical contexts, rampshaped profiles are common in architecture and engineering, such as accessibility ramps that provide a gradual incline for wheelchairs and strollers, as well as road design and loading dock configurations. In design and manufacturing, a rampshaped cross-section can facilitate sliding, entry, or transition between levels.

In mathematics and signal processing, a rampshaped curve may refer to a piecewise linear function that increases linearly with its input over a region, often used to model a threshold or a simple input signal. The canonical ramp function is zero for negative input and increases linearly for nonnegative input.
