Rallysport

Rallysport, also known as stage rallying, is a form of motorsport that takes place on closed public or private roads, often with a focus on off-road or unpaved surfaces. Unlike circuit racing, rally cars compete individually against the clock, with drivers and co-drivers navigating a series of special stages (timed sections) separated by transit stages (untimed sections). The goal is to complete all stages in the shortest accumulated time.

The co-driver plays a crucial role in rallysport, reading pace notes that describe the road ahead, including turns, gradients, and hazards. These notes are critical for the driver to maintain maximum speed and control while navigating challenging terrain. Rally cars are typically based on production models but are heavily modified for durability, performance, and safety, featuring reinforced chassis, specialized suspension, and powerful engines.

Rallysport events are organized over several days and can cover vast distances, testing the endurance of both the car and the crew. Different surface types, such as gravel, tarmac (asphalt), snow, and ice, demand unique driving techniques and car setups. The World Rally Championship (WRC) is the premier international competition in rallysport, featuring a global calendar of events. Other popular forms of rallysport include regional championships and historic rally events. Safety is paramount, with strict regulations regarding car construction, driver equipment, and course marshaling.
