Rajatieto

Rajatieto is a term used primarily in Finnish-language discourse to denote knowledge about borders, thresholds, and boundaries in both physical and conceptual spaces. The word combines rajat-, meaning border or limit, with tieto, meaning knowledge or information.

In practice, rajatieto describes tacit or explicit understanding of where boundaries lie and how they are regulated, who may cross them, and what information or resources are controlled at those boundaries. The concept is interdisciplinary, appearing in border studies, migration policy, information security, privacy, and risk assessment.

Etymology and usage of the term are not standardized across languages. It is often used in academic and policy discussions to address how societies, organizations, and individuals recognize and manage boundaries, including legal jurisdictions, regulatory regimes, and technical access controls.
