Rahapoliittisia is a Finnish term that translates to "monetary policy" in English. It refers to the actions undertaken by a central bank to manipulate the money supply and credit conditions to stimulate or restrain economic activity. The primary goals of monetary policy are typically to maintain price stability, ensure full employment, and promote moderate long-term interest rates.

Central banks employ various tools to implement monetary policy. These include open market operations, where they buy or sell government securities to influence the amount of money in circulation. They can also adjust reserve requirements, which dictate the proportion of deposits that commercial banks must hold in reserve, thereby affecting their lending capacity. Another key tool is the discount rate, the interest rate at which commercial banks can borrow money directly from the central bank. By altering these rates, central banks can make borrowing more or less expensive, influencing investment and consumption decisions across the economy.

The effectiveness and specific objectives of monetary policy can vary depending on the prevailing economic conditions and the policy framework adopted by the central bank. For instance, during periods of high inflation, a central bank might pursue a contractionary monetary policy, raising interest rates and reducing the money supply to cool down the economy. Conversely, in a recession, an expansionary policy might be implemented, lowering interest rates and increasing liquidity to encourage borrowing and spending. The Finnish central bank, the Bank of Finland, is a part of the Eurosystem and its monetary policy decisions are coordinated with the European Central Bank for the euro area.
