Rafhúðun

Rafhúðun, also known as electroplating, is an electrochemical process used to deposit a thin layer of metal onto a conductive surface. This coating can serve various purposes, including enhancing corrosion resistance, improving wear properties, increasing hardness, or providing decorative aesthetics. The fundamental principle involves immersing the object to be plated, acting as the cathode, and a piece of the plating metal, acting as the anode, into an electrolyte solution containing ions of the plating metal. A direct current is then passed through the solution, causing the metal ions from the anode to migrate and deposit onto the cathode.

The type of metal used for plating varies widely and depends on the desired properties of the final product. Common plating metals include chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, silver, and gold. The electrolyte solution is carefully formulated to maintain the concentration of metal ions and ensure efficient plating.
