Radiolysis management refers to the strategies and techniques employed to control or mitigate the undesirable effects of radiolysis. Radiolysis is the physical and chemical decomposition of materials caused by ionizing radiation. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in nuclear power plants and in the handling of radioactive materials, where water is often present and exposed to high levels of radiation.

The primary concern with radiolysis in these environments is the generation of highly reactive chemical species. In water, for example, radiation can split water molecules (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2), as well as free radicals like hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and hydrogen atoms (•H). These species can then participate in further reactions, leading to potential issues such as corrosion of metal components, degradation of lubricants, and the formation of explosive gas mixtures, especially hydrogen.

Effective radiolysis management involves several approaches. One common method is the control of water chemistry. This can include adjusting pH, adding chemical inhibitors or scavengers that react with the radiolytic products, or altering the concentration of dissolved gases like hydrogen. In some cases, it may involve removing or minimizing the presence of water altogether. Another strategy is to optimize the design of systems to minimize the accumulation of radiolytic products or to safely vent any generated gases.

The goal of radiolysis management is to ensure the safety and integrity of nuclear facilities and radioactive waste storage by preventing damage to materials and avoiding hazardous conditions. Research continues to explore more advanced and efficient methods for managing radiolysis in various applications.
