Radiologist

A radiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in medical imaging to diagnose and treat disease. Radiologists interpret images produced by X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, nuclear medicine, and positron emission tomography (PET). They may also perform or guide minimally invasive procedures using imaging guidance.

Training typically includes earning a medical degree, completing a residency in radiology, and often pursuing subspecialty fellowships in areas such as neuroradiology, musculoskeletal radiology, pediatric radiology, abdominal radiology, thoracic radiology, nuclear medicine, or interventional radiology. Most radiologists in many countries are board-certified or credentialed by national medical boards, and ongoing continuing medical education is required to maintain certification.

Core duties include interpreting studies, producing diagnostic reports, and advising on imaging strategies. Radiologists select modalities, optimize protocols, and ensure safety, including radiation dose management. Interventional radiologists perform image-guided procedures such as biopsies, drain placements, and vascular interventions, often without open surgery. Subspecialists provide expert interpretation within their field and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on diagnosis and treatment planning.

Work settings include hospitals, academic centers, outpatient imaging facilities, and private practice. The field relies on digital imaging, teleradiology, and emerging AI tools, while maintaining strong emphasis on safety, patient communication, and ongoing professional development.
