Radioisotopille is a Finnish term that refers to a radioactive isotope, a variant of an element's atom that contains an unstable nucleus and thus undergoes radioactive decay. The study of these isotopes, known as radioisotopes, is a foundational topic in nuclear physics, radiochemistry, and medical science. Each isotope has a unique half‑life, decay mode and radiation type (alpha, beta, gamma, or neutrons), which determine its suitability for different applications.

The use of radioisotopes is widespread across several fields. In medicine, isotopes such as technetium‑99m are employed in diagnostic imaging because of their short half‑life and the emit material's ability to provide clear images without excessive radiation exposure. Radioisotopes such as iodine‑131 and iodine‑129 are used therapeutically to treat thyroid disorders. In industry, isotopes like cobalt‑60 serve as sources of ionizing radiation for material analysis, sterilization of medical equipment, and in radiography to inspect welds and structural integrity.

In research, radioisotopes act as tracing agents, allowing scientists to investigate metabolic pathways, protein interactions, and DNA replication by incorporating the isotope into molecules of interest. The decay events produce signatures that can be measured with sensitive detectors, giving quantitative data about the biological or chemical processes at work. Nuclear power generation also relies on isotopes such as uranium‑235 and plutonium‑239, which undergo fission to release energy in controlled environments.
