Radiofrekvenssihäiriö, often abbreviated as RFI, refers to any radio frequency energy that interferes with the reception of a desired radio signal. This interference can originate from a wide variety of sources, both intentional and unintentional. Natural sources include lightning and electrostatic discharges, while man-made sources are far more common. These can range from electronic devices like computers, mobile phones, and microwave ovens to electrical equipment such as motors and power lines.

The effects of RFI can vary significantly depending on the strength of the interference and the sensitivity of the receiving equipment. In audio systems, RFI can manifest as buzzing, humming, or static sounds. In radio communication, it can degrade signal quality, cause dropouts, or even prevent reception altogether. In sensitive scientific instruments or medical equipment, RFI can lead to erroneous readings or malfunctions, potentially having serious consequences.

Mitigating RFI involves several strategies. Shielding is a common method, where sensitive equipment is enclosed in a conductive material to block external radio frequencies. Filtering can also be employed to remove unwanted frequencies from signals. Proper grounding of electrical systems is crucial as it provides a path for unwanted electrical noise to dissipate. Additionally, careful design and layout of electronic circuits can minimize the generation and susceptibility to RFI. Regulatory bodies often set limits on the amount of RFI that electronic devices can emit to prevent widespread interference.
