RachaLechkhumi

Racha-Lechkhumi is a historical province and a current administrative region in northwestern Georgia. It is situated in the Greater Caucasus Mountains, bordering Russia to the north. The region is characterized by its rugged terrain, deep gorges, and high mountain peaks, making it a popular destination for adventurous tourists. The name Racha-Lechkhumi is derived from the two historical principalities it encompasses: Racha and Lechkhumi.

The main rivers flowing through Racha-Lechkhumi are the Rioni and the Lechkhumi. The region is known for its rich biodiversity, including forests of beech, oak, and fir, as well as alpine meadows. The climate is continental, with cold winters and warm summers, though variations occur with altitude.

Historically, Racha-Lechkhumi was an important strategic area, often a buffer between different kingdoms and empires. It has a distinct cultural identity, with its own traditions, dialects, and cuisine. The region is famous for its winemaking, particularly for the semi-sweet red wine Khvanchkara. Agriculture is also a significant part of the economy, with livestock farming and cultivation of potatoes and other crops.

The administrative center of the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region is Ambrolauri. Other notable settlements include Oni and Tsageri. Tourism is a growing sector, attracting visitors interested in hiking, mountaineering, exploring ancient churches, and experiencing the unique natural beauty and cultural heritage of the area. The region is also known for its hospitality and traditional Georgian feasts, known as supra.
