Raadioamatööride, or radio amateurs, are individuals who use radio communication for personal interest rather than for commercial gain. These individuals are often referred to as "hams." Radio amateurs utilize a wide range of radio frequencies for communication, often engaging in various activities such as transmitting and receiving signals, constructing their own equipment, and participating in emergency communications.

The hobby of amateur radio is regulated by government agencies in most countries. Operators must typically obtain a license, which involves passing an examination to demonstrate their knowledge of radio theory, regulations, and operating procedures. Licenses are often tiered, with higher-level licenses granting access to more frequencies and operating privileges.

Amateur radio operators engage in a diverse array of activities. Many enjoy communicating with other amateurs around the world, a practice known as DXing. Others focus on technical aspects, building and experimenting with radio equipment. Some are involved in contesting, where the goal is to make as many contacts as possible within a set time period. A significant aspect of amateur radio is its role in public service, particularly during emergencies. Hams often provide vital communication links when normal infrastructure is disrupted by natural disasters. They are organized into clubs and associations, which provide opportunities for learning, social interaction, and collaborative projects.
