RTVsilikonit

RTV-silikonit are room-temperature vulcanizing silicone elastomers used for molding, sealing and encapsulation. They cure at ambient conditions and form flexible, chemically resistant rubbers. The term RTV refers to the curing process that occurs without the need for elevated temperatures.

Most RTV silicones are available as RTV-1 (one-component) or RTV-2 (two-component). RTV-1 cures in place when exposed to moisture in the air, while RTV-2 requires mixing of a base and a curing agent. Within RTV-2 there are addition-cure (platinum) systems and condensation-cure (tin) systems, which differ in cure speed, odor, and byproducts.

Key properties include high elasticity, low shrinkage, good dielectric properties, and resistance to weathering and many chemicals. Temperature resistance varies by formulation, with many able to perform from roughly -60 to +200 C or higher for some platinum-cure types. Hardness ranges from soft to medium (Shore A generally 10–60). RTV silicones can be formulated for transparency, high tear strength, or biocompatibility, depending on the application.

Common uses include mold making for resin, wax, or plaster; flexible seals and gaskets; potting and encapsulation of electronic components; and medical or dental applications where biocompatible grades are specified. For molds, separation techniques or release agents may be needed to prevent sticking to the master.

Handling considerations include the potential for skin or eye irritation from uncured material and, for acetoxy formulations, the release of acetic acid odor. Proper ventilation is recommended. Storage typically requires a cool, dry place and can extend shelf life to around 12–24 months depending on the product.
