RTNs

RTNs stands for Real-Time Networks. These are communication systems designed to transmit data with a guaranteed upper bound on the latency and jitter. This is crucial for applications where timely delivery of information is essential, such as industrial automation, robotics, autonomous vehicles, and critical infrastructure control. Unlike traditional best-effort networks which prioritize throughput, RTNs focus on predictability and determinism.

The development of RTNs often involves specialized protocols and hardware. These systems typically employ techniques like time-triggered scheduling, message prioritization, and bounded buffer sizes to ensure that data packets arrive within their deadlines. Examples of technologies that aim to provide real-time communication capabilities include Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), which is a set of IEEE 802 standards, and proprietary industrial Ethernet protocols like EtherCAT and PROFINET.

The core challenge in RTN design is managing network resources to avoid congestion and guarantee predictable performance, even under heavy load. This often requires careful network planning, configuration, and the use of specialized network interface controllers.
