RFERLs

RFERLs refers to the network of regional services and outlets associated with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). It is an international broadcaster funded by the United States Congress through the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM). The term is sometimes used to describe the collective radio, television, and digital platforms that comprise RFE/RL’s operations across multiple regions and languages.

History and structure

RFE and RL were established during the early Cold War to provide uncensored news behind state-controlled media in Eastern Europe. RFE began broadcasting in 1950, and RL followed in 1953. In 1995 the two organizations merged to form Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL). Today, the network operates with headquarters in Prague and maintains regional bureaus and correspondents throughout Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East, and beyond.
