REDdirektiiviä

REDdirektiiviä, also known as the Radio Equipment Directive, is a European Union directive that sets out essential requirements for radio equipment to ensure it can be operated without causing harmful interference and that it contributes to the high level of health and safety protection. The directive, officially 2014/53/EU, repealed the previous R&TTE Directive (1999/5/EC) and came into force in June 2016.

The primary objective of the REDdirektiiviä is to ensure the free movement of radio equipment within the European Economic Area (EEA) by harmonizing the essential requirements. Manufacturers must ensure their products comply with these requirements before placing them on the market. This includes ensuring that the equipment is safe for users and anyone else affected by it, and that it does not cause undue electromagnetic interference.

Key aspects covered by the directive include spectrum efficiency, avoidance of harmful interference, and interoperability of equipment. It also addresses aspects related to protection against cyber threats. Compliance is demonstrated through a conformity assessment procedure, typically involving a self-declaration by the manufacturer after they have met the essential requirements. Once compliant, products are affixed with the CE marking.

The REDdirektiiviä applies to a wide range of equipment that intentionally emits or receives radio waves for the purpose of radio communication or radiodetermination. This includes devices like mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, televisions, and radio receivers.
