RAASblokkolók

RAASblokkolók, also known as inhibitors of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), are a class of medications used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure, and kidney disease. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system is a complex hormonal cascade that plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance within the body. When this system becomes overactive, it can contribute to cardiovascular and renal damage. RAASblokkolók work by interfering with different steps of this pathway to reduce its effects.

There are several types of RAASblokkolók, each targeting a specific component of the system. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, for example, block the enzyme responsible for converting angiotensin I into angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor. Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) work by preventing angiotensin II from binding to its receptors, thereby blocking its effects. Aldosterone antagonists inhibit the action of aldosterone, a hormone that promotes sodium and water retention. Direct renin inhibitors, a newer class, block the initial step of the RAAS by inhibiting renin itself.

These medications are widely prescribed due to their efficacy in lowering blood pressure, reducing the workload on the heart, and protecting the kidneys. They are often used in combination with other antihypertensive drugs to achieve optimal blood pressure control.
