R2CCRNOs

R2CCRNOs is an international consortium of research institutions, industry partners, and governmental agencies established in 2018 to accelerate the development and deployment of reversible carbon capture and utilization technologies. The consortium’s name derives from the phrase “Reversible Carbon Capture, Conversion and Renewable Operation Systems.” Its primary objective is to create scalable, cost‑effective solutions that integrate carbon capture directly into the renewable energy supply chain, thereby reducing atmospheric CO₂ levels while generating valuable products.

The founding members include five universities in North America and Europe, two national laboratories, and a consortium of energy technology companies. Membership is open to any organization that submits a research proposal aligned with the R2CCRNOs mission. Governance is handled by a steering committee elected by the member organizations, and a technical advisory board provides peer review for all funded projects.

R2CCRNOs operates through a series of interconnected research hubs. Hub A focuses on electrochemical capture technologies that use renewable electricity to reduce CO₂ into liquid fuels or polymer precursors. Hub B develops catalytic conversion pathways for transforming captured CO₂ into high‑value chemicals such as methanol and formic acid, with an emphasis on energy efficiency. Hub C evaluates the environmental and economic life‑cycle impacts of emerging carbon capture and utilization systems, ensuring that deployment strategies meet international climate targets.

Funding for R2CCRNOs projects is sourced from a mix of public grants, private sector investment, and philanthropic contributions. The consortium publishes annual progress reports, maintains a public database of experimental results, and hosts symposia that bring together stakeholders from academia, industry, and policy. R2CCRNOs aims to bridge the gap between laboratory breakthroughs and commercial scale, contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change through innovative carbon management techniques.
