R1224
R1224, also known as 1,1,2,2-Tetrafluoroethane, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant. It was developed as a replacement for the ozone-depleting refrigerant R12 (dichlorodifluoromethane) in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. R1224 has a low ozone depletion potential (ODP) of 0.02, making it a more environmentally friendly option compared to R12. However, it still has a global warming potential (GWP) of 1,430, which is relatively high compared to modern refrigerants. R1224 is used in various applications, including mobile air conditioning systems, refrigerators, and freezers. It is typically used in systems that operate at temperatures above -40°C. R1224 is non-flammable and has a low toxicity level, making it a relatively safe refrigerant to handle. However, like other refrigerants, it should be handled with care to avoid exposure and ensure proper disposal to minimize environmental impact. The use of R1224 is regulated by the Montreal Protocol and other international agreements to phase out ozone-depleting substances. As a result, its use is expected to decline in favor of refrigerants with lower GWP and ODP.
