Rückentwicklung

Rückentwicklung, in biology, refers to the reappearance of ancestral traits in an organism, effectively a reversion to an evolutionary state that was present in its ancestors but is not typical of its immediate lineage. The term is often used synonymously with atavism in German, though some authors distinguish between a purely developmental reversion and broader evolutionary regression.

Mechanisms: In modern genetics, Rückentwicklung is understood as the manifestation of ancestral phenotypes when latent genetic variation—such as recessive alleles or regulatory pathways—becomes expressed due to mutations, gene regulation changes, or developmental timing (heterochrony). It is not the organism 'rewinding' evolution but a rare throwback of developmental programs.

Examples: Rare spontaneous cases include the appearance of a caudal appendage in humans (often called a "human tail"), extra nipples along the chest, or other traits reminiscent of distant ancestors. In domesticated animals or plants, atavistic traits can occasionally appear as a phenotypic throwback.

Relation to evolution: Rückentwicklung is about individual development rather than population-level evolution. It does not imply that the species re-evolves to an ancestral form; rather, it reflects the genetic basis of variation and the re-expression of ancient traits in a single organism.

Scientific assessment: Some scholars prefer the term atavism or reversion, arguing that "Rückentwicklung" can blur the distinction between development and evolutionary history. Nonetheless the concept remains in historical and interdisciplinary discussions of heredity and development.
