Quantizationvirheet, or quantization errors, arise in digital signal processing and data representation when a continuous range of values is mapped to a finite set of discrete values. This process, known as quantization, is fundamental to converting analog signals into digital formats and for storing data with limited precision. The error occurs because the original analog value cannot be perfectly represented by the closest available discrete value.

These errors can manifest in several ways. One common type is truncation error, where the fractional part of a number is simply discarded. Another is rounding error, where the value is adjusted to the nearest discrete level. The magnitude of the quantization error is typically bounded and depends on the step size or resolution of the quantization process. A smaller step size leads to finer resolution and thus smaller quantization errors, but requires more bits to represent.

Quantization errors can accumulate in digital systems, especially during repeated operations or signal processing steps. In audio and image processing, these errors can lead to audible artifacts or visible distortions, respectively. In numerical computations, they can affect the accuracy of results, particularly in iterative algorithms or when dealing with very small or very large numbers. Techniques like dithering, which adds carefully controlled noise before quantization, are often employed to mitigate the perceived effects of quantization errors, distributing them more evenly and making them less noticeable. The choice of quantization scheme and bit depth is a critical design consideration, balancing precision requirements against computational and storage resources.
