Qualitative-to-quantitative, also known as quantification or qualitization, refers to the process of transforming qualitative data into numerical form to enable quantitative analysis. The practice is common in mixed-methods research, where researchers seek to leverage the depth of qualitative insights alongside statistical methods. The conversion aims to preserve meaningful distinctions in the data while enabling aggregation, comparison, and hypothesis testing.

Methods include coding qualitative units (such as interview segments, documents, or open-ended survey responses) into discrete categories and then counting frequencies. Content analysis, thematic analysis with coding schemes, and the creation of presence/absence indicators or ordinal scores are typical approaches. Researchers may construct scales or indices by weighting codes or combining several categories into a composite variable. Automated methods such as text mining or natural language processing can assist with larger corpora, extracting features or sentiment scores that can be analyzed quantitatively.

Applications span social sciences, marketing, health research, and public policy when numerical measurement of qualitative phenomena is useful for generalization or statistical testing. Qualitative data can be turned into numbers to enable regression analysis, cluster analysis, or hypothesis testing. Limitations include potential loss of nuance, researcher subjectivity in coding, and threats to validity if the coding scheme is inconsistent or biased. It is essential to document coding rules, assess inter-coder reliability, and be transparent about transformations.

Qualitative-to-quantitative work is a facet of mixed-methods design and should not replace qualitative interpretation. It is most effective when bidirectional: qualitative insights inform measurement development, and quantitative results are interpreted in light of qualitative understanding. The term “quantitization” is used interchangeably in some literatures to describe this process.
