Quadrennial

Quadrennial is a term used to describe something that occurs every four years. It functions as an adjective, as in “a quadrennial event,” and less commonly as a noun, where “a quadrennial” can refer to an event held on a four-year cycle. The word derives from Latin quadrennialis, from quattuor, four, and annus, year.

In modern usage, quadrennial cycles commonly appear in politics, sports, and cultural events. The most widely recognized quadrennial event is the Olympic Games, held every four years at varying host cities. In many countries, presidential or national elections occur on a four-year cycle, making them quadrennial. In sports, other major international competitions, such as the FIFA World Cup, follow roughly a four-year schedule, though qualification and hosting vary by sport.

Quadrennial is related to other time-based terms. Quadrennium refers to a four-year period. Terms for other intervals include biennial (every two years) and quinquennial (every five years).
