Qianshans

Qianshans refers to a geological formation characterized by numerous small, isolated hills or mounds. These formations are typically found in arid or semi-arid regions and are often the result of differential erosion. The term "Qianshan" is of Chinese origin, translating roughly to "thousand mountains," which reflects the appearance of these landscapes dotted with many peaks.

The process of Qianshan formation usually begins with a relatively uniform layer of resistant rock overlying a softer, less resistant stratum. Over time, weathering and erosion, particularly wind and water, wear away the softer rock. However, areas where the resistant rock is thicker or more widespread remain, forming the elevated mounds. These resistant caps protect the underlying rock, leading to the characteristic isolated hill shapes. The spacing and size of Qianshans can vary widely depending on the geological composition and the intensity of erosional forces. They are distinct from larger mountain ranges, being much smaller in scale and often appearing in a more scattered arrangement.
