Pörssisähkösopimuksissa

Pörssisähkösopimus, also known as a spot electricity contract, is an electricity pricing model where the price of electricity fluctuates based on the wholesale electricity market's real-time prices. Unlike fixed-price contracts, where the price per kilowatt-hour remains constant for a set period, pörssisähkösopimukset expose consumers to the hourly variations in the electricity market.

The price in a pörssisähkösopimus is typically determined by the Nord Pool electricity exchange. This means that the cost of electricity can change significantly from hour to hour, influenced by factors such as supply and demand, weather conditions, and the availability of power generation. For example, on windy days when wind power generation is high, electricity prices might be lower. Conversely, during cold periods with high demand for heating, prices can surge.

Consumers who choose a pörssisähkösopimus often have a variable monthly bill that directly reflects their actual electricity consumption and the market prices at the times they used electricity. This type of contract can be advantageous for consumers who are able to adjust their electricity usage to take advantage of lower price periods, such as running high-consumption appliances during off-peak hours. However, it also carries the risk of higher costs during periods of peak demand or low supply. Electricity companies offering these contracts usually charge a small monthly fee or a margin on top of the wholesale price.
