Pölypunkeille, scientifically known as Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae, are microscopic arachnids that commonly inhabit homes. These tiny creatures are a primary cause of indoor allergies and asthma symptoms. They thrive in warm, humid environments and feed on shed human skin cells, which are abundant in dust. Therefore, they are most commonly found in soft furnishings such as mattresses, carpets, upholstery, and bedding.

The presence of pölypunkeille themselves is not directly harmful, but their waste products, particularly their feces, contain potent allergens. When these microscopic particles become airborne, they can be inhaled by susceptible individuals, triggering allergic reactions. Symptoms can include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, coughing, and in more severe cases, shortness of breath and wheezing. For individuals with asthma, exposure can lead to exacerbations of their condition.

Controlling pölypunkeille populations is a key strategy for managing dust mite allergies. This typically involves reducing humidity levels in the home, frequent cleaning with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter, and washing bedding in hot water regularly. Encasements for mattresses and pillows made of tightly woven fabric can also create a barrier against the mites and their allergens. While complete eradication is difficult, these measures can significantly reduce allergen levels and improve indoor air quality.
