Põletist

Põletist is a term used in Estonian to describe a severe burn. It signifies a burn injury that has damaged deep layers of the skin and potentially underlying tissues. These injuries are classified by their depth, with deeper burns being more severe and requiring immediate medical attention.

First-degree burns affect only the outermost layer of skin, the epidermis, causing redness and pain. Second-degree burns penetrate into the dermis, resulting in blisters, intense pain, and swelling. Third-degree burns extend through the entire dermis and can damage subcutaneous tissue, nerves, and blood vessels. These burns often appear white, leathery, or charred and may be less painful due to nerve damage. Fourth-degree burns are the most severe, extending into muscle, bone, or other underlying structures.

Treatment for põletist depends on the severity and extent of the burn. Minor burns can often be treated at home with cooling and pain relief. However, deeper or more widespread burns require professional medical care. This can include wound cleaning, debridement, specialized dressings, pain management, and sometimes skin grafting. Preventing infection is a critical aspect of treatment for severe burns. Long-term rehabilitation may be necessary to regain function and minimize scarring.
