Pórustömörség, also known as porosity, refers to the presence of voids, channels, or interstices within a solid material, resulting in an incomplete filling of the material's volume. This property is commonly observed in various substances, including rocks, ceramics, metals, and biological tissues, and significantly influences their physical and mechanical characteristics.

In geology, porosity is a critical factor in determining the storage and transmission capacity of fluids such as water, oil, and gas within porous media like sedimentary rocks and soils. It is typically expressed as a percentage or a decimal fraction, representing the ratio of the volume of voids to the total volume of the material. For example, a material with a porosity of 0.25 has 25% void space and 75% solid material.

Porosity can arise from different formation processes, including the deposition of sediments, crystallization of minerals, or biological activity. It can be classified into two main types: primary porosity, which develops during the initial formation of the material, and secondary porosity, which forms later due to processes such as dissolution, fracturing, or compaction.
