Päävaikutuskaavioita, often translated as main effect plots, are graphical tools used in statistics, particularly in the context of experimental design and analysis of variance (ANOVA). They are designed to visually represent the estimated effects of individual factors on a response variable, independent of any interactions with other factors.

A main effect plot displays a series of parallel lines. Each line represents a specific factor in the experiment. The horizontal axis typically shows the levels of a factor, while the vertical axis represents the estimated mean response for each level. When the lines are horizontal, it suggests that the factor has little to no effect on the response variable. Conversely, an upward sloping line indicates that increasing the level of the factor increases the response, and a downward sloping line indicates that increasing the level of the factor decreases the response.

These plots are crucial for understanding the primary influence of each factor. They simplify complex experimental results by isolating the individual contribution of each variable, making it easier for researchers to identify which factors are significant drivers of the outcome. However, it is important to note that main effect plots do not reveal any interaction effects between factors. If interactions are present, the main effect plot might be misleading, as the effect of one factor could depend on the level of another. Therefore, main effect plots are often used in conjunction with interaction plots to gain a complete understanding of the experimental results.
