Päästöskenaarioita refers to projected future pathways of greenhouse gas emissions. These scenarios are crucial tools used by scientists, policymakers, and international organizations to understand the potential impacts of climate change and to evaluate the effectiveness of different mitigation strategies. They are developed by modeling various factors that influence emissions, such as population growth, economic development, technological advancements, energy consumption patterns, and land-use changes.

Different organizations and research groups develop their own sets of emission scenarios, often with varying underlying assumptions. For example, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has historically used Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) and more recently Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). RCPs focused on specific radiative forcing levels, while SSPs describe different societal futures that could lead to varying levels of emissions and challenges for adaptation.

The primary purpose of these scenarios is not to predict the future with certainty, but rather to explore a range of plausible futures. By comparing the outcomes of different emission pathways, researchers can assess the likelihood of exceeding critical global warming thresholds, such as those defined in the Paris Agreement.
