Pääkoneet, which translates to "mainframes" in English, refers to large, powerful computers primarily used by large organizations for critical applications. These organizations include government agencies, major corporations, and financial institutions. Mainframes are designed for high-volume transaction processing, handling massive amounts of data with exceptional reliability and security.

The architecture of a mainframe is distinct from that of personal computers or even high-performance servers. They typically feature specialized processors, vast amounts of memory, and highly robust input/output capabilities. This allows them to concurrently manage thousands of transactions and users without performance degradation. Reliability is a paramount concern, with mainframes incorporating redundant components and sophisticated error detection and correction mechanisms to ensure continuous operation, often referred to as "five nines" availability (99.999%).

Mainframes are particularly adept at handling business-critical workloads such as banking transactions, airline reservation systems, and large-scale enterprise resource planning (ERP) operations. Their operating systems, like z/OS, are designed for stability and security, offering features that protect sensitive data and prevent unauthorized access. While newer technologies have emerged, mainframes continue to be a cornerstone of IT infrastructure for many organizations due to their proven track record, scalability, and cost-effectiveness for certain types of intensive computing.
