Päikesespektril, known in English as the solar spectrum, refers to the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the Sun. This spectrum is not uniform but rather a continuous range of wavelengths, with varying intensities at different parts of the spectrum. The Sun's emission peaks in the visible light portion, which is why our eyes are most sensitive to these wavelengths. However, the solar spectrum extends far beyond visible light, encompassing ultraviolet (UV) radiation at shorter wavelengths and infrared (IR) radiation at longer wavelengths.

The Earth's atmosphere plays a significant role in modifying the solar spectrum that reaches the surface. Atmospheric gases like ozone absorb most of the harmful UV radiation, particularly the shorter, more energetic wavelengths. Water vapor and carbon dioxide absorb certain wavelengths of infrared radiation, contributing to the greenhouse effect. Clouds also scatter and reflect sunlight, altering the spectrum and intensity of light reaching the ground. Consequently, the solar spectrum observed at the Earth's surface differs from the spectrum directly from the Sun.

Studying the solar spectrum is crucial for various scientific disciplines. It provides insights into the Sun's temperature, composition, and physical processes occurring within it. It is also fundamental to understanding Earth's climate, atmospheric chemistry, and the impact of solar radiation on biological systems, including photosynthesis in plants and potential health effects of UV exposure on humans. Spectroscopic analysis allows scientists to identify specific wavelengths and their absorption or emission features, revealing information about the Sun and its interaction with our planet's atmosphere.
