Pähklikoore

Pähklikoore refers to the hard outer shell of a nut. These shells serve as a protective covering for the edible kernel inside, shielding it from physical damage, environmental factors, and pests. The composition and thickness of pähklikoore vary significantly depending on the type of nut. For example, the shell of a walnut is relatively thin and easily cracked, while the shell of a coconut, which is botanically a drupe but often colloquially referred to as a nut, is exceptionally hard and fibrous.

The process of opening pähklikoore typically requires tools such as nutcrackers or significant manual force. Once removed, the pähklikoore itself is often discarded, though in some cases it can be repurposed. Some shells are used for fuel, animal bedding, or as an ingredient in compost. Certain types of pähklikoore, like that of the walnut, have also been historically used for dyes. The structural integrity of pähklikoore is a result of lignocellulose, a complex polymer found in plant cell walls. This makes them durable and resistant to decomposition. The color of pähklikoore ranges widely, from pale beige to dark brown, depending on the nut species and processing.
