Pyöristysperiaatteet, or rounding principles, refer to the established methods for approximating numbers to a certain degree of accuracy. The most common principle is rounding to the nearest value. In this method, if the digit immediately following the desired rounding position is 5 or greater, the digit in the rounding position is increased by one. If the digit is less than 5, the digit in the rounding position remains unchanged. All subsequent digits are dropped.

Another principle is rounding down, also known as truncation. This involves simply dropping all digits after the desired rounding position, without altering the digits in the rounding position. Conversely, rounding up involves increasing the digit in the rounding position by one if there are any non-zero digits following it, and then dropping all subsequent digits.

In some contexts, particularly in financial calculations, a specific rule known as "round half to even" or "banker's rounding" is employed. This rule states that if the digit to be rounded is exactly 5, it is rounded to the nearest even digit. This method helps to reduce bias in cumulative rounding over many operations.

The choice of rounding principle depends heavily on the application and the desired outcome. For scientific and engineering measurements, rounding to the nearest value is standard. For statistical analysis, bias reduction might favor banker's rounding. In simple approximations or when absolute maximum values are not critical, truncation can be used for simplicity. Understanding these principles is crucial for accurate data representation and calculation.
