Pysyvyytenä

Pysyvyytenä is a Finnish grammatical form, the translative version of the noun pysyvyys, meaning permanence, durability or stability. In linguistic terms it marks a transition into a state or role and is commonly translated into English as “as permanence” or “in the capacity of permanence.” The form is encountered mainly in formal or analytical Finnish, including philosophical, sociological and literary contexts, where the speaker or writer discusses how something is perceived, defined or functioning as a lasting condition.

Formation and use. Pysyvyytenä is derived from pysyvyys with the translative suffix that signals a change into a state or role. It functions as a predicative complement or as part of a phrase that describes how something is regarded within a given context. Its use tends to be more specialized and is less common in everyday speech, often appearing in academic writing, theoretical discussions or literary analysis.

Function in discourse. The translative form helps express comparisons of states, identities or statuses, emphasizing continuity or lasting features rather than mere change. It is suitable for discussing concepts like stability, endurance or persistence in social, cultural or organizational phenomena, as well as in abstract arguments about identity and function.
