Pyritäminen

Pyritäminen is a Finnish term that generally refers to the process of extracting or recovering pyrites. Pyrites, commonly known as fool's gold, are iron sulfide minerals with the chemical formula FeS2. Historically, pyrites held significance not primarily for their metallic value but as a source of sulfur dioxide. This compound was crucial for the production of sulfuric acid, a fundamental industrial chemical.

The process of pyritäminen would involve mining operations to extract pyrites from ore bodies. Once extracted, the pyrites would undergo further processing, which could include crushing, grinding, and concentration to separate them from other minerals. The concentrated pyrites would then be heated, often in kilns or furnaces, in a process called roasting. This roasting drives off the sulfur as sulfur dioxide gas.

The captured sulfur dioxide gas would then be further processed and reacted with oxygen and water to produce sulfuric acid. This acid had wide-ranging applications in industries such as fertilizer production, petroleum refining, and the manufacturing of dyes and explosives. While less common today due to the availability of alternative sulfur sources, pyritäminen was an important industrial method in the past. The term can also be used more broadly to describe any process involving the handling or recovery of pyrites, even if the ultimate goal is not sulfuric acid production.
