The term itself appears to be a folk etymology or misinterpretation, possibly derived from the Gaelic phrase *"peataig chiotainne"* (meaning "the cry of the wildcat"), which was later corrupted into "pycottinent." The phenomenon is often described as an eerie, high-pitched wailing or howling sound, sometimes likened to a human scream or a chorus of unseen voices, that is heard in remote, mountainous areas, especially during late autumn or early winter.

Accounts of pycottinent date back centuries, with some attributing it to supernatural entities such as the *each-uisge* (water horse) or the *kelpie*, mythical creatures from Celtic folklore. Others suggest natural explanations, such as the calls of birds like the raven or the wind whistling through narrow valleys.
