Puupiirtäjät, also known as wood engravers, are a group of artists who create relief prints on wood. The process involves carving an image into the surface of a wood block, leaving the desired areas raised. Ink is then applied to the raised surface, and paper is pressed onto the block to transfer the image. This technique is one of the oldest forms of printmaking, with origins dating back to ancient China.
