A purser is a ship's officer responsible for the accounts, cash, and passenger comfort on a commercial vessel. This role has evolved over time and is distinct from a purser on military vessels, where the term often referred to a supply officer or a person in charge of provisions. On modern cruise ships and ferries, the purser is typically the senior hotel services officer and oversees the front desk, finances, and guest relations. They manage the ship's safe, handle currency exchange, and are responsible for passenger manifests and any necessary documentation. The purser also acts as a point of contact for passengers with inquiries or issues, ensuring a smooth and pleasant travel experience.

The responsibilities of a purser can vary significantly depending on the size and type of vessel. On smaller vessels, the purser might also handle duties related to navigation or crew management. In the past, especially on passenger liners, the purser's role was more central to the overall operation of the ship, often involving significant administrative and even quasi-legal duties. Today, the purser's primary focus is on the passenger experience and the financial operations of the hotel services department. They often work closely with other departments, such as catering and entertainment, to coordinate services. The purser is a key figure in ensuring passenger satisfaction and the efficient running of the non-operational aspects of a ship.
