Puristussytytysjärjestelmät, often translated as compression ignition systems, are a fundamental aspect of internal combustion engines, particularly those that run on diesel fuel. Unlike spark ignition engines that rely on an external spark to ignite the fuel-air mixture, compression ignition engines achieve combustion through the heat generated by compressing the air within the cylinder.

The process begins with the intake stroke, where only air is drawn into the cylinder. During the compression stroke, this air is compressed to a very high pressure and temperature. As the piston reaches the top of its stroke, diesel fuel is injected directly into this superheated air. The extreme heat causes the fuel to spontaneously ignite and burn, driving the piston down in the power stroke.
