Purificatio

Purificatio is a Latin term meaning purification, used in classical Latin and in later ecclesiastical and scholarly contexts to denote the cleansing of a person, place, or thing from impurity or defilement. The concept encompasses ritual as well as moral cleansing and provides the linguistic root for modern terms such as purification.

In ancient Rome, purificatio referred to ritual cleansing intended to restore or maintain ritual purity. Purification rites were part of the broader system of sacred law and could be performed for individuals, spaces, or objects after defilement, such as contact with death or other sources of impurity. These rites often involved water, sprinkling with holy substances, and sacrifices conducted by priests or magistrates, with the aim of restoring communal order and religious propriety.

In Christian contexts, the term appears in Latin liturgical language and scholarly discussion. In Catholic tradition, purificatio is associated with the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a feast observed on February 2 (Candlemas) that recalls the biblical purification rites after childbirth.
